Itsukushima Shrine

With a bold and original layout using the sea, Itsukushima Shrine is one of the most well-known shrines in Japan and is a masterpiece of the Heian-era shinden-zukuri (palatial architecture) style. It was built in its present form by Taira no Kiyomori in the 12th century. Located on a shallow beach, the shrine grounds look as if they are floating on the sea at high tide, making for an elegant sight. The contrast with the greenery behind is also exceptionally beautiful. The shrine was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1996.

Appreciation of Kagura

Kagura is a song and dance performance offered to the gods during Shinto rituals in Japan. Kagura is performed by people in splendid costumes and expressive kagura masks who dance to the accompaniment of taiko drums, flutes, and clappers. Though it has traditionally been performed as a ritual dedicated to Ujigami (local deity) to pray for a good harvest, it is now enjoyed by people as essential local entertainment for events and celebrations.
